Burwell Ancestry

He is one of my Jamestowne Society Seventeenth Century Qualifying Ancestors. He is also listed among the Adventurers (i.e., stockholders) of the Virginia Company (Jester, pp. 386-387).

Jester, p. 108, and Brown, image 9, mention their marriage.

Jester, p. 108, and New England Families, p. 2089, indicates they were from Harlington, Bedfordshire, England.

Brown, image 10, mentions "Dorothy, with her son Lewis Burwell I..."

She married second her late husband's first cousin Roger Wingate, Treasurer of Virginia 1639-1641 (Archer).

Robert was "a prominent Indian fighter, who commanded at Middle Plantation, Williamsburg in 1644-45" (Archer). He and Joanna (née Torkesy) were parents of Lucy (below) (Brown, image 11; Archer; Kosar). His daughter Lucy's gravestone mentions him: "'the valliant Captain Robert Higginson. One of the first command'rs that subdued the country of Virginia from the power of the heathen'" (Kosar)

Brown, image 10, mentions Lucy (below) was their only daughter.

Kosar mentions that they were natives of Berkswell, England, and their daughter was Lucy, and that they migrated to Virginia in 1743.

"On 12 June 1648 he patented 2350 acres" which became the Burwell plantation known as "Fairfield" later "Carter's Creek" (Jester, p. 108, and Archer).

Jester, p. 94, says that William Bernard "married Lucy daughter of Robert and Joanna (Tokesey) Higginson and widow of Lewis Burwell (1621-1653) of Fairfield, Gloucester County [Virginia]. Lucy married (3) Philip Ludwell, died 26 November 1675, and was buried in the Burwell graveyard at 'Fairfield,' later 'Carter's Creek'," mostly repeated on p. 109.

Kosar says from her second marriage (to William Bernard), her "great-great grandson Thomas Todd ... was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807." Archer says of her third marriage (to Philip Ludwell): "Among the great-grandsons of the third marriage were the brothers and signers of the Declaration of Independence, Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee."

He was "one of the wealthiest planters in the colony, a major in the militia, a trustee of the College of William and Mary, and a member for one term in the House of Burgesses" (Kosar).
He left a will on 11 Oct 1710; proved 10 February 1711.

He "died 19 December 1710 and was buried at 'Fairfield.' The inscription on his tombstone recites that he was 'son of Major Lewis Burwell and Lucy his wife'" (Jester, p. 109).

A source for their marriage is Roberts, The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the American Colonies..., p. 842, which says, "Abigail Smith of Va. = Lewis Burwell, Jr.". Another source for thier marriage is Jester, p. 109, which says that Lewis "married (1) Abigail, daughter of Anthony Smith and his wife Martha Bacon of Colchester, England and (2) Martha, daughter of Colonel John de Lear of Nansemond County and widow of Colonel William Cole of Warwick County...."

"Abigail Smith was a niece of Nathaniel Bacon, President of the Council, second cousin of Nathaniel Bacon, the rebel, and great great grand-dau of James Bacon, Alderman of London, who was a brother of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, and uncle of Francis Bacon, Viscount St. Albans, Lord High Chancellor of England" (Archer).

Among the children of Lewis and Abigail (Smith) Burwell are "James (4 February 1689-6 October 1718) [who] inherited 'King's Creek' plantation in York County, married Mary Armistead" (Jester, p. 109).

When widowed, Mary married in 1720 to Gen. Phillip Lightfoot II.

Brown, p. 47 (image 55), indicates Jemima Cocke Burwell (below) may have been their daughter.

WikiTree: Jemima Cocke references Adventurers of Purse & Person, 4th Ed., Vol. 1, 2004, Dorman, pp. 449-450, which says, "Nathaniel Bacon Burwell, landowner of Wight County, married Jemima Cocke. Children: ... Elizabeth, 1st m. Rev Richard Hewitt minister of Hungars Parrish, Northhampton Co., Hewitt d. bef 12 Apr 1774, 2nd m. Col Edward Harwood."
