Beaumont One of the great Norman families in England. Originating in Beaumont, a town in the heart of Normandy, they were counts of Meulan and acquired the earldom of Leicester during the reign of Henry I. Waleran de Beaumont was the Earl of Worcester and his twin brother Robert was the second Earl of Leicester; a younger brother, Hugh de Beaumont, was the Earl of Bedford; their cousin Roger de Beaumont was Earl of Warwick; and a brother-in-law, Gilbert de Clare, was Earl of Pembroke. Robert de Beaumont served as Chief Justiciar of England from 1153 until 1168. The Beaumont power has declined since the third Earl of Leicester, also called Robert, opposed Henry II in the rebellion of 1173-74; he was allowed to keep his title, but was excluded from holding royal office.
